The city’s largest wind turbine, measuring 160 feet tall to the top of its blades, is scheduled to be dedicated on Jan. 14 at the Sims Municipal Recycling plant on the Brooklyn waterfront in Sunset Park, Ranaan Geberer writes in Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
The turbine is supposed to deliver about 100 kW of electricity to the site, adding to the 600 kW solar installation already at the recycling plant.
Although the use of wind turbines to generate power is widespread in Europe, with its huge wind farms, the technology has been slow to catch on here. Several recently completed residential buildings, including 388 Bridge St. in Brooklyn, have installed smaller versions of the devices on their rooftops. However, the Sims wind turbine is certainly the city’s largest.
Scott Miller, chief corporate counsel for Sims Metal Management, the parent company of Sims Municipal Recycling, said that between the wind power and solar power, “20 percent of the power at the MRF will come from renewable energy.”
The plant processes metal, plastic and glass collected by the city’s Sanitation Department. Read more at Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
